एक दिन में हजारों योद्धाओं को मारने वाले भीष्म युद्ध के 10वें दिन इस छल से हो गए पराजित, इस घटना को देखने वाला कोई योद्धा नहीं रोक पाया था अपने आंसूअम्बा ने भीष्म को मारने के लिए शिखंडी के रूप में लिया था जन्मशिखंडी पूर्वजन्म में अंबा नाम की राजकुमारी थी। भीष्म ने अपने सौतेले भाई से शादी करने के लिए अम्बा, अंबिका और अम्बालिका नाम की तीनों राजकुमारी बहनों का अपहरण किया था लेकिन जब अम्बा ने भीष्म से कहा कि वे शाल्व देश के राजा से प्रेम करती है और उन्हीं के साथ विवाह करेगी, तो भीष्म ने अम्बा को सैनिकों के साथ शाल्व देश के राजा के पास भेज दिया। अम्बा जब शाल्व देश के राजा के पास पहुंची, तो अम्बा ने उन्हें नहीं अपनाया। अपमानित होकर अंबा एक बार फिर से हस्तिनापुर लौट गई और उन्होंने भीष्म से विवाह का निवेदन किया लेकिन आजीवन अविवाहित रहने की प्रतिज्ञा के कारण भीष्म ने अम्बा से विवाह नहीं किया। इस बात से क्रोधित होकर अम्बा ने भीष्म से प्रतिशोध लेने की प्रतिज्ञा की।भीष्म से प्रतिशोध लेने के लिए अम्बा ने लिया पुर्नजन्मअम्बा ने भीष्म से युद्ध करने के लिए कई देश-विदेश के राजाओं से निवेदन किया लेकिन किसी ने भी अम्बा की सहायता नहीं की। इस बात से हताश होकर अम्बा ने भगवान शिव की तपस्या की। तपस्या से प्रसन्न होकर भगवान शिव ने अम्बा को एक नीले कमल का हार दिया और कहा कि जो भी इस हार को पहनेगा, भीष्म की मृत्यु का कारण बनेगा लेकिन अम्बा को कोई भी ऐसा योद्धा नहीं मिला, जो इस हार को पहनकर भीष्म से युद्ध करता। अम्बा ने इस हार को राजा दुपद्र के मुख्य द्वार पर लटकाकर प्राण त्याग दिए। इसके बाद अम्बा की मृत्यु हो गई। अम्बा का अगला जन्म एक ऐसे मनुष्य के रूप में हुआ, जिसमें पुरुष और स्त्री दोनों तत्व विद्यमान थे। इस कारण पुर्नजन्म की अम्बा को नपुंसक मानते हुए शिखंडी नाम दिया गया। राजा दुपद्र के घर में जन्म लेकर शिखंडी ने व्यस्क होने पर द्वार पर लटकी नीले कमल की माला पहन ली। इस तरह निश्चित हो गया कि शिखंडी ही भीष्म की मृत्यु का कारण बनेगा।महाभारत के युद्ध में पराक्रमी भीष्म के सामने नहीं टिक रहा था कोई योद्धाकुरुक्षेत्र की रणभूमि पर युद्ध लड़ रहे भीष्म पितामहा की शक्तियों का अंदाजा इसी बात से लगाया जा सकता है कि उनके सामने कोई भी योद्धा नहीं टिक पा रहा था। भीष्म एक दिन में ही हजारों सैनिकों को मौत के घाट उतार देते थे। ऐसे में अर्जुन सहित सभी पांडव चिंतित हो गए। दूसरी तरफ श्रीकृष्ण को अच्छी तरह पता था कि पुर्नजन्म में अम्बा रहे शिखंडी को भीष्म से प्रतिशोध लेना है, इसलिए उन्होंने भीष्म के सामने शिखंडी को शस्त्रों के साथ भेजने के लिए कहा। भीष्म पुरुष योद्धा के अतिरिक्त किसी पर भी अपना शस्त्र नहीं उठाते थे। इस कारण भीष्म शिखंडी पर भी शस्त्र नहीं उठाते और उनका वध करना आसान हो जाता।शिखंडी ने शस्त्रों के साथ भीष्म पर किया हमलापांडवों की सेना को धराशायी कर रहे भीष्म के सामने जैसे ही शिखंडी ने पहुंचकर तीर चलाने शुरू किए, भीष्म ने अपना धनुष नीचे रखकर कहा- "हे शिखंडी. मैं तुम पर वार नहीं कर सकता क्योंकि मैं रणभूमि पर केवल पुरुषों से ही युद्ध करता हूं और तुम पूरी नहीं पुरुष नहीं हो। इस कारण मैं तुमसे युद्ध नहीं करूंगा।" भीष्म की बात सुनकर शिखंडी ने उत्तर दिया-"हे भीष्म.
