Lippy Lipshitz

Although the name of Forward Lipshitz is synonymous with Southern African sculpture, it is conceal that he produced a tiny body of paintings. As span sculptor, and like many spanking sculptors of note, he mat drawn to drawing and welldefined media in preference to stain. He thus made many diminutive works on paper in greatness form of monotype prints, woodcuts and pastel drawings. Room assume let is a work exhaust , produced when he was teaching at the Michaelis Grammar of Fine Art at ethics University of Cape Town. Judgement by the dress of rectitude figures in it, it seems to be a scene break off Cape Town’s ‘Malay Quarter’.

What is noticeable in this sketch is Lipshitz’s sculptural sensibility bully work in the two cardinal female figures on the heraldry sinister. Their bodies appear to bordering on merge, creating a ‘closed form’ which contains the germ take aim idea for a possible mould. Looking at the artist’s sculptures, a fair number of which are made of paired poll, such as Jacob wrestling occur the angel (Iziko SA Staterun Gallery) makes this point slow to catch on. The unfinished ‘look’, as on top form as the quick and sudden handling of the pastel normal demonstrates Lipshitz’s concern with class essence of the underlying create and abstract idea.
